Connected Speech is used to teach pronunciation for ESL and EFL in language centres, schools, universities and colleges worldwide. Pronunciation is one of the most important aspects of learning a new language, but with English teaching, it is one which has traditionally been regarded by teachers as difficult and time consuming to teach. Research has shown that the suprasegmental features are important, and if learners don't understand how these operate in English, it is easy for them to give the wrong message when they speak or to misunderstand the embedded message in what they hear. By understanding suprasegmental features, learners can both express their message more clearly and accurately when they speak and understand more easily and accurately what they hear.
Based on videos of extended passages of natural speech, the activities are arranged in 7 modules: Getting Started, Pause Groups, Stress, Pitch Change, Linking, Syllables and Sounds. There are a wide range of activities – over 350 - to provide further practice for each of the suprasegmental features. For each of the 6 pronunciation modules, there is a comprehensive tutorial that explains, demonstrates and provides examples for each of the modules.
