What is the approach?

  • Video introduction. A teacher explains the learning objectives of the unit — for example, to build an online profile and proofread it.
  • Phone app for vocab. Students can use the integrated phone app to pre-learn vocabulary for the unit through study cards and games. It's fun and convenient.
  • Interactive activities. In each unit, students work through 12 interactive activities: exercises, quizzes, tests and writing assignments. There's lots of practice!
  • Study sheets. Each unit includes a Resource Bank of study sheets, transcripts and model writing. Learners can refer to it at any time.

How can my students access it?

Practical Writing is available on laptops and desktops, tablets (iPad and Android) and CD-Rom. The integrated phone app runs on iPhone and Android.

System requirements

There is a choice of licence types: network or online. The main difference is how students will access the learning resources.

Network licence

The network version is installed within your institution and can be accessed by students only on computers within the centre.

Online licence

The online version is available to students from any computer with access to the Internet. Students simply go to the site and log in. If you are using Results Manager (Learner Tracking licence), their scores will be kept on a central database which you, as a teacher, can similarly access from any computer connected to the Internet.

If you plan to use the program solely within the institution, you should choose the network version; if you would like to integrate the resource into post-class or homework activities, you need the online version.
