General instructions:
Download a set of ZIP packages from Clarity's webserver - the URL will be in an email sent to you. Extract them to your webserver. Depending on the structure of your webserver and whether you followed default folder names, you may have to edit some configuration files.
If you are using a SQLServer or MySQL database, you will need to run a script to create the tables that the title needs. Full details are in a document that comes with the downloads - or see the installation guides listed above.
Your ISP needs to provide a type of scripting (either ASP or PHP) and a database (MySQL, SQLServer or Access).
You will need to be able to transfer files with FTP from your computer to the webserver. Your ISP will give you a name and password and you will need to use some FTP software. This can be part of IE or Firefox or be a dedicated FTP client such as CuteFTP.
You will also need to be able to use a database admin tool to run an SQL script to create a database, unless you are using Access in which case you can just copy a file using the FTP.
Clarity is happy to help you do this if you are prepared to give us temporary access to your website. Please contact us for more details.
Windows: The only user that you need to set permissions for is the Internet Guest Account, called IUSR_xxx, as this controls all access through the webserver. If you have installed to a /Clarity folder, set the following permissions: /Clarity – set Everyone to read /Clarity/Database – set ISUR_xxx to Full Control (if you are running with Access) /Clarity/Content/Authorplus – set ISUR_xxx to Full Control (if you have Author Plus Pro)
If you don’t do this, when you run dbCheck.asp you will see the following message in the report :
Write text to user table with UserID=1: failure - -2147467259: Operation must use an updateable query.
or you will fail to save new exercises you create in Author Plus.
Look for a folder called Database which contains a file called score.mdb. As learners run the program and their progress is recorded, a file score.ldb is created and deleted to control locking of the database. So everyone needs permission to add, edit and delete files in this folder. Set Everyone to read this folder.
If you have a program with authoring, then teachers will need write access to the Content folder.
Apart from this, everyone needs read and execute access to all files and folders.
PHP is very configurable, and some settings will stop your Clarity title from working. One of these is display_errors. The default setting is E_ALL &~E_NOTICE. Some code in the software reports warnings of undefined variables on some PHP systems so if your display_errors is set to E_ALL, you will not be able to run Author Plus.
Please contact us for other settings that can impact your installation.
At the end of the network installation you will have the programs running on the server. You then need to make shortcuts on each desktop for learners to access them.
One way to do this is to go to each workstation and use My Computer or Windows Explorer to browse the network folder where the programs are installed. Then click to drag the .exe file to the desktop. You need to make sure that you see the mouse cursor show the little curved arrow that indicates a shortcut. If you see the + sign it means you are copying the file (if you accidentally do this, when you try to run it you will just see a blank box stuck at 0%). Holding down the Alt key before you let go from the drag will work most of the time.
The Clarity Recorder lets you record and playback your voice from within a browser. It works on any Windows computer. You need to download a separate recording program (see below). You install this and start up the Clarity Recorder from the icon on your desktop. From now on, any Clarity program you are running on the web will be able to do recording and playback. When you install, you have a choice to let the program auto start - this is recommended as it will always be ready for you and does not take up much space.
Download here (4.5MB, Windows 98/NT/2000/XP/Vista). This is an executable installation file.
If you are blocked from downloading .exe files, then click here to download a ZIP version.
