If you have installed or run a desktop or network version of one of Clarity's programs (such as Tense Buster or Study Skills Success) you will have also installed an old version of the Clarity Recorder. You can uninstall this program from the Control Panel or from the C:\Clarity\Recorder\Remove.exe program, just as you would any other application. But if you run Tense Buster again, it may try to re-install the old Recorder. To stop this from happening, download and run this small patch. This puts a fake version of the old Recorder onto your computer that will not do anything (it is really just a text file), but stops any re-installation.

Any existing Clarity programs that you have running on the computer or network will work with the new Clarity Recorder, although you will have to remember to start the Recorder manually as it can no longer be run automatically.

If you have installed or run a desktop or network version of one of Clarity's programs (such as Tense Buster or Study Skills Success) you will have also installed an old version of the Clarity Recorder. In most cases, you can uninstall this program from the Control Panel or from the C:\Clarity\Recorder\Remove.exe program, just as you would any other application. But sometimes the uninstall will fail on 64-bit computers as the Recorder was developed before they existed.

Download and run this uninstaller. It will remove the old Recorder Windows registry entries. Whilst it was also written for 32-bit OS, it does run on 64-bit OS as well. Or, if it does not run, try the following manual steps:
  1. Look in the Windows registry for egusound. You might find the following:

    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\EGUSoundSystem.AudioRecorder

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\EGUSoundSystem.AudioRecorder

They can both be deleted, as can anything else you find.

  2. Look for C:\Windows\System32\egusound.ocx and delete it.

The Clarity English home page does two things, it provides a place to log in and it creates links to all the programs that you have subscribed to. Your own pages can do both of these as well, so that the Clarity programs appear to run direct from your website. The simplest method is to add a link for each program to your web page; you can either pick this up from the html of the Clarity home page, or just contact us (support@clarityenglish.com) and we will send them to you in an email. When your learners click this link, the program will start running and it will ask them to log in.

The Clarity programs are designed to look their best on monitors with resolution of 1024x768. However, there are times when you want the screen to be bigger on a monitor with higher resolution. Sometimes you can do this, though please be warned that tiny changes in line breaks can mean the text wrapping can change and in rare cases some lines might overlap.

If you are running the programs online from www.ClarityEnglish.com, then you can add the parameter &resize=true to the URL that you are using. If you log in direct from www.ClarityEnglish.com and just start your program from the icon, you can check the URL of the pop-up window to copy the URL and then change it.

Online: The overall bandwidth required to run Clarity programs for learners is almost completely governed by the amount of multimedia used in the course. A typical unit (which might be the amount of work a student does in one session) is about 5MB. So you can calculate your overall bandwidth based on the number of students and the amount of work you think they will do in a month. Peak bandwidth occurs when a group of learners all start the program at the same time. At this point, each learner will download 1MB in ten seconds.

Road to IELTS 2: This is a much bigger program than the others. The initial download is about 5MB. However, most or all of this will be cached in the browser. The program uses a special type of Flash Player components that are provided by Adobe and cached in a special place in your browser. This makes them faster. Road to IELTS 2 also has a lot of large video which will be streamed from a variety of websites. Road to IELTS 2 requires a good broadband connection.

Running Clarity programs over a 56k dial-up connection will be very slow. Learners should have a broadband connection or its equivalent.

If a Clarity program is running over a Windows network, a 10MB connection is recommended - it is highly unlikely your network will use less than this anyway.

In special cases you can host the Clarity programs on your own webserver. Consider this option if you have a large licence running on a campus that could not ensure good Internet connection for a large number of users. You may also consider self-hosting if your campus or country firewall is likely to cause issues.

Software requirements. Your webserver should be running PHP 5.2 with standard modules plus those listed below.
  • ZEND optimizer (free from http://www.zend.com/en/products/guard/runtime-decoders)

  • curl

  • gmp

  • pdo_sqlite

  • xsl

Hardware requirements. The important thing is that you can run the above software on your webserver. Clarity programs do not have any minimum RAM or processor speed requirements. It is generally true that more RAM helps a website perform better, as does separation of the database server and webserver. Clarity programs stream audio and video, but you do not need any special hardware for this.

Management: Whilst Clarity will help to install our application programs on your server, we cannot take responsibility for optimising, tuning, maintaining or backing up the database or anything running on your server.

Remote access: To self-host a Clarity title you must allow Clarity remote access to read the folder where the Clarity software is installed and the database tables used by the application. We just need read-only access, unless you would like us to assist with upgrades or trouble-shooting. We will never take any data from your server without permission or disclose any details outside our support team. We can provide a fixed IP address for added security.

Disadvantages: You have to provide your own technical support for installation and ongoing maintenance. You do not get automatic upgrades, though you are still entitled to free upgrades.

The software can run on any Windows-based computer on the network with a shared folder. The Windows version used should be 2000, XP, Vista, 7, or any Windows Server version. Learners will need write permissions to an Access format database (Microsoft Office is NOT required). Due to the use of the Access database, it is not recommended to run more than about 30 concurrent computers. Also note that if you are using a regular version of Windows (i.e. non-server), this may limit you to 10 computers on your network.

Advanced or large installation:
The software can run on any Windows-based computer on the network with a shared folder. The Windows version used should be 2000, XP, Vista, 7, or any Windows Server version. A simple Apache webserver will be installed on your server on a free port and SQLite will be used for the database. These are part of the installation. If you want, you can move the Clarity title to your own webserver after the installation.

Hardware requirements:
You do not need any special hardware to run Clarity programs on your network. It is generally true that more RAM helps a server run more programs at once. The Clarity programs stream audio and video, but you do not need any special hardware for this. The computers should have headphones, ideally with a microphone, and a monitor with at least 800x600 resolution.

Normally you start a Clarity program by logging in and choosing from a set of menus. However, sometimes a teacher will want learners to work on a particular section - and needs a way to direct the learners to this place. The learners might also have already logged into your system and you want to avoid logging in again. You can do this by passing information to the program when you start it. In general, the faster your connection the better, but the following lists what will happen if you have a slow connection:

Initial download. The time it takes to download is directly dependent on your connection speed. Once it has downloaded once, it will be much quicker next time. Even if you clear your browser cache it will still be quicker as some parts get stored in a trusted cache in the browser (They come direct from Adobe.)

Watching videos. The videos are streamed so if your connection is too slow, they will keep pausing and buffering. We have different channels that work better in different countries, and can also deliver a low-quality video if you have a slow connection.

Doing interactive exercises. These do not need much bandwidth, you may just need to wait a few seconds for each one to load.

Listening to audio. Audio streams as well, but takes much less bandwidth than video.

Overall, it is video streaming that will be affected by a low speed connection. Other areas will work OK after the first time. We recommend at least a 128Kbit/s - but remember that your speed will depend on other people using your shared line in most cases.

We send you, on request, a set of SCORM objects for your titles. These are tiny ZIP packs containing an LMS manifest (an XML file used for making an output file can be applied for all LMS environment). You would usually save all these objects in your LMS shared repository so that any teacher / course creator can access them. Then when you are building a course, you import the one you want as a SCORM object. The manifest contains the information to point at your account and the program is still simply hosted on Clarity's server.

When a student accesses the course in the LMS for the first time they will be automatically registered so no extra login to the Clarity program is needed. The progress that the student makes will be passed back to the grade book of the LMS. Likewise a bookmark is saved so you can go through the object in multiple sessions.

The SCORM objects will be sent after you order but there are examples you can test with at any time. Click here for more information.

The network licence does not have an expiry date. You can use the Clarity programs for as long as you wish.

We realise that as advances are made in technology all the time. That is why we continue to upgrade the software to stay compatible with new operating systems. When a new operating system appears we will release any necessary patches or upgrades and deliver it to you free of charge.

From time to time we also release new content. If there is a substantial revision there may be an upgrade charge, as with all software, but there is no obligation to purchase this and you can continue to run your existing copies.

Tense Buster, for example, was first released in 1993 and has been continually updated for more than 20 years. So you need to have no concern on this point!

This is easy to do as you can download some sample content (a unit from Active Reading, Business Writing, Road to IELTS or It's Your Job) in the form of a SCORM learning object. You can import this into your LMS, and it will connect to the software and content running on our server. Your LMS will pass information to it and it will report back to the LMS.

If your LMS supports objectives, you can now get detailed progress records. You don't need to do anything to get this new function if you are running with Clarity hosting. Please contact us (support@clarityenglish.com) to upgrade if you are self-hosting.

Most Clarity programs are SCORM-compliant, such as: Active Reading, Business Writing, Clear Pronunciation, Customer Service Communication Skills, English for Hotel Staff, It's Your Job, Study Skills Success, Tense Buster.

You can create your own content in Author Plus and publish it as a SCORM object. Do let us know (support@clarityenglish.com) if you have any trouble doing this.

Many institutions are running Learning Management Systems (LMS), otherwise known as Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). Most of these follow a standard called SCORM, meaning that content published independently can be integrated into the LMS/VLE.

The huge advantages of this are that all learner information is held in one place, all progress reporting is standardised, yet institutions can use content from many publishers or sources.

Clarity programs are SCORM 1.2 compliant and SCORM 2004 compliant, so by using your LMS course builder modules you can add a link from your course direct to any particular section of the program.
