2. Perpetual licences
For the few remaining perpetual self-hosted licences (this licence is no longer offered), upgrades are provided on the same basis as for network licences.

3. Licence extension
As with network licences, schools extending their licence simply pay the difference between the old licence and the new licence. For annual subscriptions there will be an adjustment to synchronise end dates. The adjustment will be done on a pro rata monthly basis: months partly completed will be treated as being fully completed.

Example:

  • Leeds College, UK, subscribed to 30 Learner Tracking licences of Clear Pronunciation on 1st January, 2011. The price was £245.

  • On 15th June, 2011 they decided to extend the licence to 50 Learner
    Tracking licences (normal price £365)

  • New price (£365) minus old price (£245) = £120

  • Adjust for months used (i.e. 6): £120 / 2 = £60

  • Final price: £60. All 50 licences expire on 31st December, 2011

This is easy to do as you can download some sample content (a unit from Active Reading, Business Writing, Road to IELTS or It's Your Job) in the form of a SCORM learning object. You can import this into your LMS, and it will connect to the software and content running on our server. Your LMS will pass information to it and it will report back to the LMS.

If your LMS supports objectives, you can now get detailed progress records. You don't need to do anything to get this new function if you are running with Clarity hosting. Please contact us (support@clarityenglish.com) to upgrade if you are self-hosting.

Most Clarity programs are SCORM-compliant, such as: Active Reading, Business Writing, Clear Pronunciation, Customer Service Communication Skills, English for Hotel Staff, It's Your Job, Study Skills Success, Tense Buster.

You can create your own content in Author Plus and publish it as a SCORM object. Do let us know (support@clarityenglish.com) if you have any trouble doing this.

With an Anonymous Access (AA) licence, you purchase access for a number of concurrent users. If your licence is for 25 learners and 25 people are already using the program, the 26th person will see a message saying that the licence is currently full. As soon as one person exits the program, a licence slot becomes free.

A student can create an account for themselves in an AA licence. They use an email address and password for access. They can then track their own progress, but there is no teacher or admin tracking for the student. An institution can generate reports on overall usage levels, but for detailed reports on student activity, a Learner Tracking licence is required.

6. In the Clarity Course Builder, is there a maximum number of courses and units which I can create within one teacher account?

Many institutions are running Learning Management Systems (LMS), otherwise known as Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). Most of these follow a standard called SCORM, meaning that content published independently can be integrated into the LMS/VLE.

The huge advantages of this are that all learner information is held in one place, all progress reporting is standardised, yet institutions can use content from many publishers or sources.

Clarity programs are SCORM 1.2 compliant and SCORM 2004 compliant, so by using your LMS course builder modules you can add a link from your course direct to any particular section of the program.

You can download a sample content (a unit from Tense Buster) in the form of a SCORM learning object. You can import this into your LMS, and it will connect to the software and content running on our server. Your LMS will pass information to it and it will report back to the LMS.

Do let us know (support@clarityenglish.com) if you have any trouble doing this.

Licences are not transferable and remain used until the licence renewal date. A licence is assigned to a single learner and is valid for up to a year. If a learner has used a program, removing their name from Results Manager will NOT free up the licence. At the renewal date all licences become available for use again. New students or students who have already used a licence from the previous year will use up one new licence when they start the program. For students who carry over from the previous year, the process is seamless and all their progress records are saved.

If you have licences unused at the end of the year they are NOT transferred to the next year.

Road to IELTS is an online application so you must be connected to the Internet to use it. In general, the faster your connection the better, but the following lists what will happen if you have a slow connection:

Initial download. This is around 5MB. The time it takes to download is directly dependent on your connection speed. Once it has been downloaded once, it will be much quicker next time. Even if you clear your browser cache it will still be quicker as some parts get stored in a trusted cache in the browser (they come direct from Adobe).

Watching videos. The videos are streamed so if your connection is too slow, they will keep pausing and buffering. We have different channels that work better in different countries, and can also deliver a low quality video if you have a slow connection.

Doing interactive exercises. These do not need much bandwidth, you may just need to wait a few seconds for each one to load.

Listening to audio. Audio streams as well, but takes much less bandwidth than video

Overall, it is video streaming that will be frustrating to watch with a low speed connection. Other areas will work OK after the first time. We recommend at least a 128Kbit/s - but remember that your speed will depend on other people using your shared line in most cases.

Do you want to track the activity and progress of individual learners using Clarity programs? This is...
Do you want to track the activity and progress of individual learners using Clarity programs? This is the first question to answer in deciding whether an Anonymous Access or Learner Tracking licence is more appropriate for you.

If you are buying for a library, for example, you will probably be giving learners access for self-study, and there is no requirement for you to find out exactly what they are doing. In this case, as with self access centres generally, you should opt for the Anonymous Access licence.

If, however, the Clarity programs are a compulsory part of a course of study, you will need to monitor student activity and should therefore choose the Learner Tracking licence. Also, if you are running the programs through an LMS / VLE such as Moodle or Blackboard, and you would like activity data to be sent to the gradebook, you should choose the Learner Tracking licence.

With a Learner Tracking licence you can create teacher and reporter accounts. When you log in with these accounts as a teacher you do NOT use up licences and your progress is NOT included in Results Manager, so it does not skew any reports.

The number of teacher / reporter accounts you can create as a part of your licence is equal to 10% of learner licence total, up to a maximum of 30. So for an online licence for 50 learners, for example, you can additionally create 5 teacher accounts.

With an Anonymous Access licence there is no individualised login, so everybody who uses the program is taking up one licence for the duration of their activity. The same is true of a network licence.

The library licence is based on concurrent access. So, for example, if you have a 20-user licence for Tense Buster, 20 people can use it at any one time. If the 21st person tries to log in, they will see a polite message suggesting them to try again later. As soon as an existing user logs off, that licence slot is freed up for someone else.

When a learner starts the program, they are given the choice to log in with an email and a password - or they can just start anonymously. If a learner uses a login, their progress will be saved for them across sessions.
If a learner is using a tablet within the library, the program will try to connect to the library account using wifi. If this works, the learner will then be able to use the program with the same choice of login or anonymous access. To enable this, you need to provide the IP address(es) of your wifi connections, which we then associate with your account.

If the learner uses a tablet outside the library, they can login using their email PROVIDED they have already registered it using the tablet inside the library or their desktop browser from home.

Online: The overall bandwidth required to run Clarity programs for learners is almost completely governed...
Online: The overall bandwidth required to run Clarity programs for learners is almost completely governed by the amount of multimedia used in the course. A typical unit (which might be the amount of work a student does in one session) is about 5MB. So you can calculate your overall bandwidth based on the number of students and the amount of work you think they will do in a month. Peak bandwidth occurs when a group of learners all start the program at the same time. At this point, each learner will download 1MB in ten seconds.

Road to IELTS 2: This is a much bigger program than the others. The initial download is about 5MB. However, most or all of this will be cached in the browser. The program uses a special type of Flash Player components that are provided by Adobe and cached in a special place in your browser. This makes them faster. Road to IELTS 2 also has a lot of large video which will be streamed from a variety of websites. Road to IELTS 2 requires a good broadband connection.

Running Clarity programs over a 56k dial-up connection will be very slow. Learners should have a broadband connection or its equivalent.

If a Clarity program is running over a Windows network, a 10MB connection is recommended - it is highly unlikely your network will use less than this anyway.

Yes, you can embed the IP address and/or the referrer address into the licence and thus limit access to the online system to your computers.

There is a very popular protection tool called EZProxy that a lot of libraries use. This lets a student log in to the library website from anywhere, and then the Clarity program can be set to run only if it is called from EZProxy. This opens the program to all students who can log in to your website, and blocks it to all others. Click here for more information.

Please contact us (support@clarityenglish.com) for help in setting this up.

We send you, on request, a set of SCORM objects for your titles. These are tiny ZIP packs containing an LMS manifest (an XML file used for making an output file can be applied for all LMS environment). You would usually save all these objects in your LMS shared repository so that any teacher / course creator can access them. Then when you are building a course, you import the one you want as a SCORM object. The manifest contains the information to point at your account and the program is still simply hosted on Clarity's server.

When a student accesses the course in the LMS for the first time they will be automatically registered so no extra login to the Clarity program is needed. The progress that the student makes will be passed back to the grade book of the LMS. Likewise a bookmark is saved so you can go through the object in multiple sessions.

The SCORM objects will be sent after you order but there are examples you can test with at any time. Click here for more information.

One of the attractions of an online licence is that your learners can use the materials from anywhere on the Internet. But how can you make sure that other people are not also using these resources and taking licences away from your learners?

With a Learner Tracking licence this is not really an issue as you will give your learners a name and / or ID and password so that they authenticate themselves when they log in. After learners leave your institution, it is a good idea to remove their names from Results Manager so that they no longer have access.

For an Anonymous Access licence, there is no login. If your institution has a website that requires a login from students, then that website can have a link, or links, to the Clarity programs. To make sure that only students who can access the website can use the link, you can set up IP authentication. The most common software for this is EZProxy, but there are other similar tools. The proxy server acts as if there is one single IP address for all users who click on the link. The Clarity software can limit access to just this IP address.

If there is no such tool available, URL referrer access can be used to limit access to the titles to students who come from a particular webpage.

If you want to limit access to a specific room or building, an IP range or ranges can be used as well.

To arrange this kind of security for your account, please contact us (support@clarityenglish.com) with details of your IP, or with any questions you have.

Yes. You author your content as usual with Author Plus. Then you export it to SCORM. This creates the shared content object, SCO, that you then import into your LMS. Again, the SCO is just a set of pointers to the full program and content - so the LMS will link to your copy of Author Plus when the learner wants to run your content.

Whilst there are no hard rules, it seems to be a good idea to split SCOs into Author Plus units. This lets you group material together, whilst still preserving the goals of reuse and keeping everything manageable. So if you have created a whole course in Author Plus, you might turn it into a number of SCOs - which you can then import into different sections of your LMS-based course.

Normally you start a Clarity program by logging in and choosing from a set of menus. However, sometimes a teacher will want learners to work on a particular section - and needs a way to direct the learners to this place. The learners might also have already logged into your system and you want to avoid logging in again. You can do this by passing information to the program when you start it. The Clarity programs are designed to look their best on monitors with resolution of 1024x768. However, there are times when you want the screen to be bigger on a monitor with higher resolution. Sometimes you can do this, though please be warned that tiny changes in line breaks can mean the text wrapping can change and in rare cases some lines might overlap.

If you are running the programs online from www.ClarityEnglish.com, then you can add the parameter &resize=true to the URL that you are using. If you log in direct from www.ClarityEnglish.com and just start your program from the icon, you can check the URL of the pop-up window to copy the URL and then change it.

If you are running the network programs, the newest ones do allow screen maximising. If your version does not, please click here to see if there is an update that you can get.
